...is the manufacturing process by Hanson Paver Products, Inc. that utilizes the state-of-the-art equipment and technology for facemix. This equipment allows Hanson Paver Products, Inc. to produce the highest quality paver with a smoother, more durable, more vibrant top surface while meeting or exceeding the ASTM C-936 specifications for concrete interlocking pavers.
According to the interlocking Concrete Paver Institute, the definition of a facemix paver is: "The application of a layer of fine aggregate and cement to the top surface of a concrete paver. This layer is often colored and is used to provide a more intense appearance, greater abrasion resistance or to provide a base for a textured finish."
The top, or face mix (termed "facemix") is designed with a different concrete mixture, which consists of additional cement, fine sand screenings, silica sand and pigment. This unique mix design provides a tighter paver surface, intensifies color, extends color life cycle, hardens the surface to resist wear and makes the face denser. Facemix pavers retain their color because of the concentration of pigment on the top section of the paver and the use of silica sand. Silica sand hardens the surface and fills in the microscopic holes in the design mix, thus greatly limiting the rate of oxidation. The bottom of the paver, or coarse mix, is designed with a blend of aggregates that utilize the maximum volume of large aggregate to provide maximum strength. This improves both the compressive and flexural strength of concrete pavers. The end result of the remarkable process is a concrete paver designed to weather Floridašs climate.
